Eden of the East - 02 - A phone to kill for
It doesn’t just look cool
Probably one of the more interesting shows this season that doesn’t rely on moe or mecha, Eden of the East is looking pretty good with episode 2 giving us a slightly clearer picture on what exactly is going on.
Assuming you haven’t already trawled the OP song frame by frame for spoilers.
Continuing from the previous episode, the true nature of the phone is revealed to us by Juliz, the voice behind the phone and apparent concierge to all who hold one. That’s right, if you haven’t already guessed from the OP, there are 12 such phones each charged with an obscene amount of money.
“At your service”
It would seem these 12 phones are part of something called the “Selecao System” and Juliz, like a true concierge, accepts and conducts any requests by the wielder of the phone.
Instant personalized airport service
In return, the request is charged to the phone and a corresponding amount of money is deducted. The phone even lists all transactions completed, including an apparent request by Akira, as he’s called now, to brainwash himself. Though this doesn’t seem like the case based on episode 1.
And cue the bad guy. A detective by the name of Kondo, he holds phone number 4. Nothing much about him is revealed but it is pretty much obvious he’s a loser.
He has taken an interest in Akira and the reason is soon revealed by the remaining amount left in his phone. It would seem that his intention is to do away with Akira and obtain his phone for even more spending money.
Quite the spendthrift aren’t we?
How he spent his money to the point where he owes people 2 million is beyond me. But when his debtors come knocking, the fearsome power of Juliz comes to play as he orders Juliz to take them out.
“OMAE MOU SHINDE IRU…”
“Bang!”
It’s obvious that whatever this organisation is, it ain’t simple. Activating an assassination team in under 5 mins certainly isn’t.
A common recurring word in the show is Noblesse oblige which is apparently literally means “nobility obligates” in French. You can call it the french version of Spiderman’s motto “With great power comes great responsibility”. This also appears in the OP in the form of “The abuse of greatness is when it disjoints remorse from power”. The whole thing smells like a giant experiment where 12 selected people (also in the OP) are given almost limitless freedom to do whatever they want with a large amount of money.
Though what their (the organisation) intentions are are unknown beyond it supposedly being “a service to the country” or a “messiah”.
Meanwhile, romance is in the air as Saki and Akira start to have some interesting moments…
“Shall I take you to a place, a place where wishes are granted?”
Not a very good omen to have a smoking crater as a background if you ask me
A short reference to the 9/11 incident and the Freedom Tower further indicates that the show will probably involve terrorist activities some how. Perhaps in the form of Akira’s true identity?
But it’s not even built yet…
Suffice to say, this show should prove very entertaining. Seems that everything is getting a film version these days.
When you are rich, stepping into the ladies is nothing
If there is such a system in Singapore please sign me up. =D
Noblesse oblige actually refers to the idea of the strong helping the weak no matter what. Zomg I learned this through anime wtf.
@Panther: that is correct. Because the strong have power and are “obliged” to help the weak. Hence the idea of power and responsibility. Though human nature is seldom like that ^^;
I like the phone design. IF the real one ever produced, I’m sure it will sold out instantly ^^
Does it come with a 2-year plan?
